CICE Tours Dominion Offshore Wind Project

On June 24, CICE and NCSEA hosted a delegation of chamber and economic development leaders, policymakers, and regional stakeholders for a guided boat tour of Dominion Energy's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project.

We ventured 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, getting an up-close view of two pilot turbines in operation and the ongoing construction of the remaining foundations for the 176-turbine, 2.6-GW project.

Attendees had the chance to see the Orion, an approximately 700-ft heavy lift offshore wind installation vessel, loaded with monopiles ready to be placed on the new foundations. We also observed installation vessels assisting with subsea cable installation closer to the shore.

The CVOW project is a powerful example of the technological advancements and economic opportunities generated by offshore wind development, creating regional jobs, stimulating the economy, and supporting the sector’s growth and supply chains.

"Offshore wind presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Hampton Roads to become the East Coast hub for this burgeoning industry,” said Alisa Crider, Director of Investor & Public Relations, Hampton Roads Alliance. “The economic potential is incredible, offering unprecedented growth and prosperity for our region. By positioning ourselves at the forefront of offshore wind development, we can create thousands of jobs, attract significant investment, and solidify Hampton Roads as a leader in renewable energy."

Upon completion, the project’s lease area will equal 85,000 football fields and have the capacity to power up to 660,000 homes. To date, there are approximately 74 subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers involved, with a total of $136,624,000 invested in the project.

Visiting Dominion's Coastal Offshore Wind provided an educational experience—and great photos—while inspiring support for renewable energy initiatives and highlighting the sector’s potential.
